Chairman's Notes-February 20, 2014

       Sitting comfortably in our homes enjoying the peaceful presence of our family and friends it is altogether too easy to to forget that there are countless millions living in fear and oppression. Some live in distant lands such as North Korea, Ukraine, China, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe. Others are closer to home: abused children and elders, victims of human trafficking, the poor. Sitting comfortably in our homes we find ourselves distracted by the latest celebrity scandal, the latest hit game, or Facebook. Public discourse is reduced to ten second soundbites and sophistry designed to drive us apart.
       The purpose of politics is to unite and not drive us apart. It is how we communicate and reach decisions. Human beings are at their best when they unite around a common cause. For too long, demagogues on both sides of the aisle have hijacked the political process to suit their own ends. Rather than make a logical and persuasive argument for their positions they resort to calling their opponents RINOs, Statists, etc. Politicians, Republicans and Democrats, must now tread carefully or face personal attacks by various factions within their own parties. This has led to dysfunction at all levels of the political process. Such dysfunction only serves to discredit the government and create social instability.
       What then, can we do? We must overcome our own personal fear and oppression. We must stop being afraid of the "other" and united face the future unafraid. When we communicate with one another, talking to each other and not at each other, I believe we will find that we have more in common than we now realize. We will be able to end human trafficking, protect the weak, and help the poor. Then we will be able to truly sit comfortably in our homes.      

Chairman's Notes-February 13, 2014

       Yesterday was the 205th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Growing up, Lincoln was my hero. The first book I read was a biography of him, I collected Lincoln memorabilia, I even had a giant poster of him hanging on the wall at the foot of my bed. I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. To me he embodied what it meant to be an American. Of humble origins, with little education, and a thin reedy voice he rose to become the leader of his nation and guide us through a terrible civil war. A lesser man would have given up but he had faith that right made might.
       Nowhere is that faith better embodied than in his Second Inaugural Address. Often people like to quote the last paragraph where he speaks of binding up the nations wounds "With malice toward none, with charity for all..." I, however, like the third paragraph where he states, "Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away." Hope. People may think that hope came with Barack Obama but it did not. Hope has always been here. Hope was here when the civil rights movement was roiling the nation. Hope was here when the nation mobilized for war after suffering disaster in Pearl Harbor and the devastation of the Great Depression. Hope was here marching with the suffragettes, shuffling through the lines with the immigrants at Ellis Island, and huddling around meager camp fires in Valley Forge. Hope is an action, hope is a prayer borne in breast of all who dream.
       There are those today who say that there is no hope. That men and women are not capable of bettering themselves or this land. They say that we need the government to tell us how we are to live our lives and interact with our fellow human beings and environment. They say that only the government can give us hope and change. Some in government even say that they must dictate social policy for our own good. They are wrong. History bears witness to the fact that hope and change can only come from within and that social policy must come from the people if it is to have a lasting impact. Government of the people, by the people, and for the people is what the Republican Party has always stood for. From our abolitionist beginnings to today we have stood for the peoples right to self determination. We still proclaim "FONDLY DO WE HOPE" in a loud and clear voice and may we never stop doing so.
       In this supposedly enlightened time when the political atmosphere is more poisonous than ever I urge everyone to read Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address (link provided at bottom). What does it say to you? Thank you and God love you.

Chairman's Notes-February 06, 2014

       One week ago today, I was elected the new Chairman of the Pima County Young Republican Club. Since then I have been thinking of ways in which we can grow the clubs membership, support the county party, and work to spread Republican ideals and principals so that Pima County will have a brighter future. As part of this process I have been actively seeking the counsel and input of the clubs executive board and others who have an interest in the future of our party. The following are some initiatives that have come out of those conversations.
       Social media outreach is important to the future of the party. Therefore, I am happy to announce that the Pima County Young Republican Club is now on Twitter! Follow us on Twitter @PimaYRs and like us on Facebook as well (https://www.facebook.com/groups/pimayrs/). Over the coming year, I hope to grow our presence online by rebuilding our website, weekly blog posts, an email newsletter, and possibly creating a YouTube channel. Stay tuned for updates on these efforts.
       I realize, however, that no matter how good our website is or how many videos we make it is all for naught if we are not reaching out to our fellow Republicans. The Republican Party is a big tent party. We are made up of many groups with differing philosophies. All too often we choose to focus on what separates us rather than on what unites us. This causes conflict within the party that only benefits the Democrats. Over the coming months I hope to meet with various groups to see how we can work together on the issues that we agree on while respecting each others positions on the issues that we do not agree on. One of the principals that have helped to make this country great is that of E Pluribus Unum...Out of many, one. That one is not monolithic uniformity but rather it is monolithic like the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is made up of many panels, each one different. Separately each panel is a perfectly acceptable sheet of copper with its own unique design but, only when those sheets of copper are combined with the edges that they hold in common do you get Lady Liberty.
       Lastly, I would like to announce that this months meeting will be held on the 27th at Denny's on Speedway (3655 E. Speedway Blvd.). We will have a social time beginning at 6:30pm with the meeting itself starting at 7:10pm. This months speaker will be Damien Kennedy who is running in the Republican primary for the 3rd Congressional District. It's a new year and exciting things are happening with the Pima County Young Republicans! At our meeting in January we had our club elections. Our new officers are as follows:

This year we hope to play an important role in the mid-term elections; connecting our members with the various candidates, informing the voters of Republican principals, and reaching out to the community to make Pima County a better place for all. Within the next month we hope to get our new website up and running as well as a twitter account. Stay tuned for details and more announcements.

And the winner is......

....Frank Antenori!

State Senator Frank Antenori received the most votes in our CD8 Debate Straw Poll last night.  Senator Antenori was followed by retired Air Force Col. Martha McSally.  Local businessman and broadcaster Dave Sitton came in 3rd place, barely outpacing Jesse Kellly, who was the 2010 Republican nominee for the CD8 General Election.

I was surprised by the results and want to congratulate Senator Antenori for winning the Straw Poll.  His margin of victory was pretty substantial and we'll have to see what kinds of correlation the straw poll has to the actual vote totals on April 17.

Out of 350 people who attended last night's debate, 119 people voted in the straw poll, or a little over 1/3 of the crowd.  Frank Antenori received 48 total votes or just over 40% of the total.  He was followed by Martha McSally who had 30 votes or just over 25% of the ballots cast.  Dave Sitton received 22 votes or just under 18.5% of the votes.  And Jesse Kelly had 19 straw poll votes, which was 16% of the total votes cast.

Senator Anterori represents Legislative District 30 in the Arizona State Senate, so it was also surprising that he did so well at the event held deep in the 26th Legislative District which only shares a small border with LD30 in the Catalina Foothills of Tucson.

Tonight's debate was great!

Tonight's debate over at CDO High School went great for those of you who missed it.  We had 350 people in attendance and many others throughout the entire congressional district listening to it on KVOI 1030 AM's radio station or KVOI's online live streaming of the debate.  All four candidates did a great job of showing why Republicans have a much better vision for America than their Democratic opposition.

We conducted a straw poll at the debate to see how activists and everybody else in attendance planned on voting in the race.  And we just finished counting the ballots for our straw poll.  I was quite surprised by the results myself.  I'll be releasing the results tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM on Joe Higgin's radio show "Wake-Up Tucson" on KVOI 1030 AM "The Voice" Radio Network.  And I will be posting the results here shortly thereafter.

We want to thank all of the the candidates again for taking part in tonight's debate and we want to thank all of the many volunteers who helped with everything.

PIMA COUNTY YOUNG REPUBLICANS HOST IMPORTANT CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE

All Four Republican Candidates Seeking to Fill Gabrielle Giffords' Seat Attending

(Tucson, AZ) The Pima County Young Republican Club in partnership with the Legislative District 26 Republican Party is proud to announce a Congressional Candidate Debate this coming Monday, March 26 from 7:00-9:00 pm in the auditorium of Canada del Oro High School (CDO).

All four Republican candidates running to fill the open CD-8 seat previously held by Representative Gabrielle Giffords will be participating.  This includes State Senator Frank Antenori, Jesse Kelly, Colonel Martha McSally, and Dave Sitton.  The CD-8 Special Election will be an important bellwether with national implications going into the 2012 Presidential Election.

The debate will be simulcast live on radio station KVOI 1030 AM The Voice.  Joe Higgins will act as debate moderator.  Mr. Higgins is a local Republican entrepreneur, a former candidate for County Supervisor in District 1, and the host of “Wake Up Tucson,” a radio program on The Voice.

Other special debate sponsors include the Oro Valley Republican Women's Club and the Pima County Tea Party Patriots.

The Young Republicans will conduct a Congressional Candidate Straw Poll at the debate for $2 per entry with a strict limit of one entry per person.  Straw poll results will be announced the following day on the Pima County Young Republican blog at PimaYRs.blogspot.com.  The Young Republicans will also be collecting early ballots for people who want to turn them in at the debate. 

CDO High School is located at 25 W Calle Concordia, Tucson, AZ 85704.  The auditorium holds up to 650 people, and a full crowd is expected.  Doors will open at 6:00.  Early arrival is suggested to ensure a seat.

Next Pima YR meeting Monday, March 19

Greetings Fellow Young Republicans,

We have a lot of exciting events coming up in the near future.  First, I wanted to announce our next meeting of the Pima County Young Republican Club.  The meeting will be held Monday, March 19th at Mr. K's BBQ at 4911 North Stone Avenue in Tucson (on the southwest corner of River Rd & Stone Ave).  Our guest speaker will be Sean Collins who is running for the Pima County Board of Supervisors in District 4.  As always, we will have a social hour starting at 6:30 pm & our meeting will begin at 7:00 pm.  For more information on Sean's campaign, you can visit http://collins4supervisor.com/

Pima YRs Recently in the News

The Pima County Young Republican Club has received some extra coverage recently in the local news.

First, KVOA News 4 recently ran a story about a debate watching party that the Pima YRs held at the home of our Vice Chairman Mike Cole during the Arizona Republican Presidential Debate.  We had a great time & enjoyed watching the Republican Presidential candidates sharing their views on issues that would be most important to Arizona voters.  Club member Christi Garner was interviewed for the segment that played on the 10:00 news as wells as Club Chairman Tyler Mott.
 

And then, on the night before the primary, KGUN 9 News stopped by the home of Club Chairman Tyler Mott.  The YR E-Board was meeting to discuss plans for our upcoming CD8 Special Election Republican Debate.  KGUN 9 interviewed Tyler about his thoughts on the next day's Republican Presidential Primary in Arizona.  You can read the story & see the video clip here.

Meeting Tomorrow at Skybox Restaurant & Other Upcoming Events

I just wanted to update everybody on an exciting week coming up for the Pima County Young Republicans. So, here's the list of what's going on this week with the Pima County Young Republican Club:

Tomorrow - Monday, February 20:

Our monthly meeting at Skybox Restaurant on the northeast corner of River and Craycroft. Our speakers will include candidates running for the Pima County Board of Supervisors in District 1: Ally Miller; Stuart McDaniel; and State Rep. Vic Williams (if he's able to make it down from his duties at the State Legislature in Phoenix). We will be having a social hour starting at 6:30 and our meeting will start at 7 pm. 

Wednesday, February 22: 

The Tucson Tea Party has a big rally with Republican Presidential candidate and former US Senator Rick Santorum. The event with Senator Santorum will be held at the Sabbar Shrine Center at 450 S Tucson Blvd.

Doors to the event will open at 10 am. In an earlier email I gave the wrong start time, so notice the time change. It is still strongly recommended that people come early as seating is limited. The event runs until 1:30 pm. More information on this event can be found at the Tucson Tea Party website.

Later in the evening on Wednesday, the Pima YRs will be meeting at the home of Pima YR Vice Chair Mike Cole for a Republican Presidential Primary Debate Watching Party. This will be the only Presidential Primary debate held in Arizona in anticipation to our Republican Primary on Tuesday, February 28. It also appears that this will be the final primary debate for 2012. Mike Cole's address is 8138 N Streamside Ave, Tucson, AZ 85741 for those who want to go and need directions.

The debate starts at 6 pm, so it is recommended that people arrive around 5:30 to get good seats.

Friday, February 24:

Join the Pima County Young Republican Club as we support our local hockey team play against our arch rivals. Arizona Wildcat Hockey goes up against the evil ASU Scum Devils this coming weekend.

Friday's game starts at 7:30, so for Young Republicans who want to join us and get tickets together, please be at the Tucson Convention Center ticket office no later than 7 pm. For more information on the Icecats, go to arizonawildcathockey.org.

Hi everybody,

For those of you who don't know, my name is Tyler Mott & I was just elected as the new Chairman of the Pima County Young Republican Club during our January 10th meeting. I am honored by this opportunity & strongly believe that this will be a great year for Republicans in Arizona & nationally. The other club members elected to help lead our club are Michael Cole as Vice Chairman, Absalom Hall as Treasurer, and Kevin Hartung as Secretary.

We have exciting plans for this coming Election year & we have a lot of work to do. With a Presidential Election, an election for US Senate, a number of Congressional seats up for grabs, new State Legislative Districts to fight for, and a number of county and other elections, our candidates need as much help as we can give them. It's going to take a lot of work, and the Pima County YRs plan to have a very busy year that will allow for our members to actively engage in this election cycle.

We are starting things very early this year due to the tragic events of last year's shooting in Tucson that killed 6 innocent people and wounded 19 others including the critical injuries suffered by Congressman Gabrielle Giffords. Rep. Giffords has decided to step aside to focus on her recovery. We hope the best for her and her family and pray that she can fully recover. The effects of that madman's rampage will be felt here for a very, very long time. Rep. Giffords' resignation means that we will have an early Special Election to replace her in Congress.

The YRs will be inviting the Republican candidates for Congressional District 8 the opportunity to share their positions with our members, and we hope that they will all be able to join us at one of our upcoming meetings. I will get you all more details as I have them.

We had invited former State Senate President Russell Pearce to speak at our January meeting, but he had unforeseen events that forced him to have to reschedule. Senator Pearce is tentatively slated to be our main invited speaker at our February 20th meeting. I will be getting all of the details out in the next couple days for everyone.

On a final note, I encourage everyone to come back here to our blog & to visit our website www.pimayrs.com often to be able to see updates from the club. We will be updating both of these very soon & as often as possible.

It's always nice when we can put a local spin on things. I liked this video of a recent protest against Obama's Destruction of American Healthcare Bill.

I like how they are using the Dem "mob" attack against the Dems. This video shows just how ridiculous that attack is. I also liked Sean Hannity's idea of all conservatives giving themselves a good mobster nickname. I think that I will call myself "Tommy Gun Tyler."

Obama, Chavez, Hillary & Castro

Hey everybody, I’m back from my initial training with the United States Army & I promise to post on here more often in the future.

For my first post since returning from military training, I feel that it’s important to talk about the very fragile situation down in Honduras.

It seems that our President & Secretary of State have come down on the side of the two most repressive dictators in the Western Hemisphere.

Here's a little background. As many of you know, Hugo Chavez is the extreme socialist thug, who wanted to be President for life of Venezuela in order to spread communism across Latin America. Chavez also had a friend and socialist ally in Honduras who also liked the idea of being Honduran President for life. So, the thug in Honduras, Manuel Zeyala, decided to force his way into being President for life by pushing a ballot initiative to change to the Honduran Constitution. The Honduran Supreme Court then ruled Zeyala's referendum was unconstitutional since any major constitutional changes in Honduras must be originated by the elected assembly.

But in an act meant to destabilize the entire democracy in Honduras, Zeyala tried to force the military to hold the referendum anyway. When Honduras' commanding general refused to go against the ruling made by the Honduras Supreme Court, Zeyala fired the general. The Supreme Court then ordered that the military detain Zeyala due to Zeyala’s attempts to overthrow Honduran democracy & push for his own authoritarian rule. Sunday morning, troops followed the orders of the Honduran Supreme Court & detained Zeyala. Mr. Zeyala then asked to receive safe passage to Costa Rica instead of standing trial for his crimes against the democracy of Honduras. This safe passage was granted & then once safely inside Costa Rica, Mr. Zeyala began to cry that he was the victim of a coup d'etat. We know this is not at all what took place.

Once Zeyala was removed from office the Honduran Assembly voted to chose its Speaker as the new interim President of Honduras. The new President is also a member of Zeyala’s political party so this was not some kind of partisan attack. This was a defense of continuing democracy in Honduras. As such, the new President immediately announced that the Presidential Election scheduled for this fall would go on as planned with no changes to allow for candidates to remain in power indefinitely as Zeyala had desired. It was an absolutely bloodless & necessary dismissal of a Head of State who no longer believed in the institutions of democracy & the rule of law.

Now comes the liberal establishment of the world & those who support socialism, communism & other left-leaning authoritarian regimes. They are crying foul. They believe that the crime in this situation was the deposing of Zeyala & not the true crime which was Zeyala's quest to end democracy in Honduras.

Who has echoed this cry? The loudest voice has been the psychopath Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez. And he has been followed by the brutal Castro brothers in Cuba. The words of Chavez & the Castros have been regurgitated by their American media allies, the New York Times & the Washington Post.

But who else has condemned the ouster of the wannabe Honduran dictator? Well, our very own Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, did. And so did our President Barack "BIG GOVERNMENT" Obama. Once again, Obama comes down on the wrong side. You can tell a lot about a person by the company that person keeps. And if I were Obama, I would think long & hard about whether or not being on the same side as Hugo Chavez & Fidel Castro was a good thing.

The positions of President Obama & Sec. Clinton are irresponsible & dangerous & further flame the fire of the communist trio of Chavez & the Castro brothers. We cannot support the forms of government that these men espouse. In making statements against what has happened in Honduras without considering all of the facts, we endanger struggling democracies in the entire hemisphere.

How can President Government ask that we hold judgment on the ayatollahs in Iran when he refuses to hold judgment on the Honduran Congress, Honduran Supreme Court & the thousands of Hondurans who have been protesting Zeyala's brutal tactics & his authoritarian power grab?

I would hope that if any American President tried to change the length of his or her term in office 5 months before he or she became ineligible for re-election that there would be an outcry from the international community & support for the people at home who would see right through this.
